Announcement: The Remember in November Contest for Creative Nonfiction

This was the card I filled out. I then decided to take it to the next level with The Remember in November Contest for Creative Nonfiction.

A few weeks ago I received a pledge request from the Alzheimer’s Association. I thought, as I filled out the card, how it fitting it would be to make the donation on behalf of Hippocampus Magazine. I know I’m not alone when I admit I’m extremely afraid of losing my memory. I’m sure most everyone is. Perhaps those who write memoir cling to the past a little more than the average person because so much of our creative livelihood is dependent upon using our, well, hippocampus.

Then it hit me. When I started Hippocampus, an annual creative nonfiction writing contest was always part of the plan. Now that idea will forge forward with a dual purpose—to raise awareness and rally support for Alzheimer’s Disease while promoting promising writers. The result of both is the same: keeping memories alive!

So, The Remember in November Contest for Creative Nonfiction was born.

Between now and September 15 enter your best piece (or pieces)–essays or memoir excerpts with a fall theme will be accepted. A portion of the $10 entry fee will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Winning stories—selected by a panel of to-be-announced judges—will be published in the November 2011 issue of Hippocampus, coinciding with National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.
