The first round of judging in our 2015 Remember in November Contest for Creative Nonfiction is complete. The reading panel and editorial staff found it quite a challenge to narrow down our submissions to a short list, and then further narrow down our strongest entries to five finalists, so much so that we ended up with six:
- Charisse Coleman, “Penalty Phase”
- Dina Honour, “Unwrapped”
- Cynthia Jalynski, “Lessons from My Sire”
- Tyler Lacoma, “The Sound of Ice”
- Jeanine Pfeiffer, “Until We Have Loved”
- Carol Smith, “Object Lessons”
These stories are now in the hands of our fabulous guest judges, Amy Jo Burns, Jennifer Alise Drew, and J. Michael Lennon.
One of these fine writers will win our grand prize of $1,000 and also receive a complimentary registration to HippoCamp 2016, our annual creative nonfiction conference. We’ll announce the winner and runner-up the afternoon of Nov. 1, 2015, and all six stories will be part of the November issue. We absolutely cannot wait to share them with you.
Also on Nov. 1, we’ll list our semifinalist/short-listed stories, many of which will grace the pages of future Hippocampus issues.
A big congratulations to Charisse, Dina, Cynthia, Tyler, Jeanine, and Carol! And also a hearty thank you to everyone who submitted to the contest: it’s safe to say you made our job difficult. There is enormous talent in the creative nonfiction world, that’s for sure.
Thanks for reading!
