2016 Remember in November Contest for Creative Nonfiction Finalists Announced

This year’s Remember in November Contest for Creative Nonfiction received a record number of submissions. As always, it was quite a challenging task to narrow down several hundred submissions to a short list, then a semi-finalist list, and, finally, to six finalists. Then, we sent off our top picks to our guest judges (Jay Varner, Kathleen Frazier, and last year’s winner, Carol Smith), and tomorrow we’ll reveal the winner.

We thought we’d give you a little sneak peek by revealing our six finalists on the eve of New Issue Day. We’re pleased to recognize the following writers:

  • Elizabeth Miki Brina, “Arizabesu”
  • Naomi Cohn, “13 Ways of Looking at a Black Bird”
  • Jessica Chiccehitto Hindman, “Advanced Placement”
  • Dina Honour, “1001 Nights”
  • Robert Rubino, “Spinning Shame Into Nostalgia”
  • Robert Weinberger, “Enough”

One of these fine wordsmiths will win our $1,000 grand prize and receive a complimentary registration to HippoCamp 2017, our annual creative nonfiction conference. We’ll announce the winner and runner-up by early afternoon tomorrow (Nov. 1, 2016), and you’ll be able to read all six stories in the November issue. We absolutely cannot wait to share these works of creative nonfiction with you.

A big congratulations to Elizabeth, Naomi, Jessica, Dina, Robert R., and Robert W.! Also a hearty thank you to everyone who submitted to the contest: it’s safe to say you’re a talented bunch and made our job challenging. And, of course, HUGE kudos to our reading panel for devoting so much extra time reading the past several months.

Thanks for reading and, once again, we cannot wait for tomorrow!
