Hippocampus Magazine, volunteer-run and reader-supported, is looking to welcome some new members to our team. A magazine focusing solely on CNF should reflect the full spectrum of human truth; as we expand our staff, we are especially interested in broadening its perspective, too.

MARKETING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Content Marketing & Social Media Specialist, Community; and Content Marketing & Social Media Specialist, Creative
Help us tell the Hippocampus Magazine story, promote our contributors, and engage with the literary community.
One prong of Hippocampus Magazine’s three-fold mission is to engage with readers and writers of creative nonfiction—that is, to create and participate in conversations with our audience. We’re seeking to fill two new volunteer content marketing/social media positions.
Each of these positions will focus in a different area, either to create content that encourages visits to our current issue, therefore promoting our latest contributors and their work, or to create evergreen content related to the literary community, writing life, or our magazine in general.
Responsibilities
- Position 1 (CREATIVE) – create compelling Twitter and Facebook post(s) for each work of creative nonfiction per bi-monthly issue, about 10-15 pieces per issue
- Position 2 (COMMUNITY) – craft 10-12 social media posts (evergreen content) of interest to readers and writers of creative nonfiction or that apply to the greater literary community
- Time commitment: 3-4 hours per month
- Note: This position involves creating content and does not entail managing social media accounts (posting, responding, etc.).
Desired Skills and Experiences:
- Ability to write succinct, engaging copy meant for a general audience.
- Familiar with Google Drive and comfortable with project management software to communicate and track milestones. (We use Trello.)
Term/Details:
- This is a volunteer position
- Six months, initially – renewable from there on a year-long term basis
- Content creators writers will be listed on masthead in our Community Engagement/Marketing section

Visual Content Creator
Help bring the Hippocampus Magazine story to life through visual content. We’re looking to add a design-savvy content creator to our volunteer team.
Responsibilities
- Create graphic elements (some using an established template for brand consistency) to support social media, email, and other content marketing efforts, such as an image announcing our new bi-monthly issue
- Time commitment: 3-4 hours per month
- Note: This position involves creating content elements and does not entail posting/sending
Desired Skills and Experiences:
- Ability to create compelling graphics within established brand identity and to spec for various platforms
- Familiar with creating alt-text, and the reasons for doing so
- Familiar with Google Drive and comfortable with project management software to communicate and track milestones (We use Trello)

Digital Marketing Coordinator
Help tell the Hippocampus story and build community with our readership through assisting with our digital marketing efforts, most notably our monthly email newsletter.
Responsibilities
- Assist with creation, writing, and editing of our monthly email newsletter and other related marketing assets
- Time commitment: 2-3 hours per month
Desired Skills and Experiences:
- Copywriting/marketing writing experience
- Familiar with MailChimp
- Familiar with creating alt-text, and the reasons for doing so
- Familiar with Google Drive and comfortable with project management software to communicate and track milestones (We use Trello)

EDITORIAL
Reading Panel Members, Essays
We’re looking to add 5-8 dedicated volunteers to our essays/memoir reading team; we’re especially interested in expanding and broadening perspectives of our reading panel so that we may uncover CNF work that captures the full spectrum of human truth. As a member of the essays reading panel, you’ll help shape future issues of the magazine. Past reading panel experience is NOT necessary.
Responsibilities:
- Read and rate about 10 essays per week from our incoming submissions
- Time commitment: 6-10 hours per month
Term/Details:
- This is a volunteer position
- Six months, initially – renewable from there on a year-long term basis
- Reading panel members will be added to masthead after being active for about a month
Desired Skills or Experience:
- Passion for true stories
- Comfort-level with Google Drive and Submittable

PRODUCTION & OPERATIONS
Production Coordinator
If you love true stories AND are tech-savvy or have project management experience, you can help *literally* put our magazine together. We’re looking for someone with WordPress experience and comfort with Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Forms) to help us organize and manage content, and help us produce our bi-monthly issues.
Responsibilities:
- Work with flash and essays editors to move final drafts into content management system
- Help manage user-submitted media and content assets such as contributor bios and photos
- Provide assistance, as needed, with identifying visuals for stories
- Help format and prepare issue content for publication (via WordPress posts)
- Time commitment: 5-8 hours per month during “issue months”; 2-3 hours during other months
Term/Details:
- This is a volunteer position
- Six months, initially – renewable from there on a year-long term basis
- You will be listed on the masthead as part of our operations/production team
Desired Skills or Experience:
- Intermediate WordPress user
- Familiarity with technical SEO
- Knowledge of web accessibility best practices
- Experience with Google Drive, Docs and Sheets
