Hippocampus Magazine, along with a few generous partners, is offering four scholarships — with a total of six full and two partial awards — to HippoCamp: A Conference for Creative Nonfiction Writers.
Each HippoCamp scholarship application requires an essay question about a writing lesson learned and two open-ended questions, which vary based on the award. The deadline for all applications is June 15, 2021.

Scholarships from Hippocampus Magazine
Friends of Hippocampus Scholarship
Made possible in part by HippoCamp attendees and Friends of Hippocampus Magazine, this conference scholarship is to support writers of any gender, race, age, or identity who require financial assistance to complete their journey to HippoCamp 2021.
Two awards available: full registration, pre-conference workshop of your choice, and a $150 travel stipend. One runner up will receive a partial scholarship by way of a $250 discount on their conference registration.
Writers of Color Scholarship
Made possible in part by HippoCamp attendees and Friends of Hippocampus Magazine, this conference scholarship is to support writers of color who require financial assistance to complete their journey to HippoCamp 2021. For the purposes of this opportunity, we define “writer of color” as a writer of any age, gender, or identity who is not white.
Two awards available: full registration, pre-conference workshop of your choice, and a $150 travel stipend. One runner up will receive a partial scholarship by way of a $250 discount on their conference registration.

Hungry Dream Scholarship
Sponsored by members of Joanne Lozar Glenn’s Fall 2020 Prompting the Muse Writing class, this scholarship is to support a writer of any gender, race, age, or identity with a “hungry dream” that HippoCamp 2021 will help them to achieve. This hungry dream could be finding time to focus on writing away from family or job responsibilities, gaining new writing skills or knowledge, or learning more about how to get started or take your writing to the next level.
This scholarship will be awarded based on financial need and a concrete writing-related aspiration the recipient would like to achieve, for example, learning craft, finding a supportive writing community, connecting with a potential writing or publishing mentor—or something the sponsors of this scholarship haven’t yet imagined—that would create a turning point on the writer’s path.

Jean Snow Memorial Scholarship
Sponsored by author Athena Dixon and named for her godmother, this scholarship is to support a writer of color who is planning to attend HippoCamp 2021 as a first-time writing conference attendee.
Athena’s late godmother was a lover of the arts and a kind, encouraging soul who wrote a beloved children’s story for the young people in her life. She would want to help a writer step onto their creative path and ease into the world of writing conferences through an intimate, focused gathering designed to foster community and connection for writers of all skill levels, backgrounds, and identities.
One award: full registration + a seat in Creative Writer’s Survival Handbook pre-conference workshop.
