Kristen Paulson-Nguyen, our Writing Life editor, will participate in our Sunday flash sessions, where six speakers give a 10-minute talk. She’ll give a talk all about finding just the right title. Thanks to Kristen for participating in our Q&A!
Tell us a little about your involvement this year at HippoCamp.
I’m excited for so much! As Writing Life editor, I can’t wait to meet past contributors in person, thank them, and also hear stories from potential new contributors. I’m looking forward to seeing writers I met at my first HippoCamp in 2019. I’m looking forward to Allison’s memoir proposal workshop. And I can’t wait to present as a flash presenter. Attendees will hear actionable ways to create memoir titles.
Our motto is “memorable creative nonfiction.” Tell us about one of the more recent memoirs, essay collections, or individual essays you’ve read and why it was memorable.
I love Creative Nonfiction’s Sunday Short reads. I adore them all, but this one by Jennifer R. Hubbard is a favorite.
What made you decide to participate in HippoCamp this year as a speaker? If you’re a returning speaker, how did your past experiences encourage you to want to come back?
I wanted to help. So many writers talk about being “terrible at titles.” It was also the next logical step for me professionally, and the next step in being courageous.
What’s going to keep you busy between now and HippoCamp?
I just finished teaching three flash fiction classes for the first time, which was a wonderful experience. I’ll be revising my memoir, working on Title Doctor projects, and vacationing in Delaware.
Since you’ll also be attending the conference, when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat,” what are you most looking forward to learning or doing?
Soaking up knowledge and making new connections.
We love introducing Lancaster to attendees. If you live here or have been here before, what would you recommend to other attendees? And, if this will be your first time here, what are you looking forward to?
Central Market is just across the street. It’s a great place to bring back something cool in a jar to your family.
