Friends of Hippocampus Membership Program

Like a lot of independent literary magazines and organizations, Hippocampus Magazine is a volunteer-led labor of love. We’ve grown a lot — in reach, readership, and offerings — since our first issue in May 2011. Since 2014, we’ve made an effort to pay our contributors an honorarium, and, throughout the years, we’ve become more involved in the literary community by attending events like AWP and expanding our mission through our annual conference for creative nonfiction writers, HippoCamp.

What was once a mostly editor-funded endeavor can no longer sustain itself, financially, alone.

The Friends of Hippocampus Magazine Membership Program allows individuals to directly impact their fellow writers and the greater writing community, to be a bigger part of an organization they care about.

The Friends program, along with any proceeds from our annual conference, will help us help other writers through our new Writers for Writers Submissions Fund, and it will help us cover the costs associated with running an online magazine: web hosting and technology, software/marketing subscriptions, postage, advertising, memberships, printing, and event space rental. (Read our official Friends announcement, a heartfelt speech from our flash editor)

As an update for 2021, our annual conference was hit hard by the pandemic and some technology issues required us to do some behind-the-scenes web work and also switch web hosting companies. Personal funds were required to help in both of these instances. In short, we need your help now more than ever.
