Editor’s Notes: April 2012

Usually I include a picture of myself wearing a funny (in my opinion) shirt. Last month, though, I did socks. This month, I am doing a prop. This was in Chicago during AWP. I just thought the sign was funny.

Happy April and Happy New Issue!

I thought about making an April Fool’s Day joke in our monthly email or hidden somewhere in the new issue, but I am terrible at making things up – that’s why I love nonfiction. It’s the brilliant stuff you CAN’T make up!

This issue’s collection of creative nonfiction takes you from before conception (in Davis Scott’s memoir excerpt about being a sperm donor, “The First Shot)” to near the end of life (in Carol Feiner’s “Any Good News?”). In between, Alicia Hendley and her husband await test results during her at-risk pregnancy in “Passed Over”; Tiffany Hauck plays her first garage band gig in “Marking Time”; Patty Somlo recounts vacations and moments with her husband while waiting for a meteor shower in “If You Could Explain It”; and Charles B. Snoad recalls “An Image of My Father.”

On the articles end, interviews editor Lori M. Myers speaks to Joshua Foer, author of Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything.” We feature two memoir reviews – one new and one that may be new to you: Memory of the Map: A Cartographic Memoir and My Battle of Algiers. Two Writing Life essays round out the article section. Lisa Ahn explores the question, “What if I never get that book deal?” while William Henderson looks at mythology in a whole new light after interviewing the author of the novel The Song of Achilles, “The fact of the matter: Mythology as creative nonfiction”.

OTHER STUFF

  • Congratulations to MT Cozzola for winning Most Memorable for March 2012; her essay Third Waterfall gushed with comments (see what we did there?). She’ll get a $10 Amazon.com gift card. Don’t forget to like, comment on and share your favorite stories this month; you can help choose the April winner!
  • {prompts} – we’re extending the deadline for the March 2012 call for submissions in the monthly writing prompt. “Oops. I wasn’t supposed to see that.” We’d love for you to submit!
  • Rock ‘n’ Roll issue: The deadline for our first theme issue is April 15. The issue will publish July 2012. This month we feature a rock ‘n’ roll theme story (which was submitted many months ago, prior to the announcement); that story is a good example of the type we are looking for. Good luck! We’re super excited for this issue.
  • In March, I hit AWP in Chicago and got to meet some authors we’ve published in Hippocampus. Check out our Facebook photo album if you get a chance!
  • Reader Survey — Thanks to everyone who participated in the survey. We’ll publish the results in the May 2012 issue.

That’s all, folks! Enjoy your April!

Donna
