This year at Hippocampus Magazine we published 50+ pieces of creative nonfiction from emerging and established writers, and we are extremely proud of the brave, unique, and compelling voices we get to share with our readers in each issue. And every year, as award nomination deadlines loom, we’re faced with an incredible challenge.
We are delighted to announce our six Pushcart Prize nominations; these stories represent our motto “Memorable Creative Nonfiction” well.
Our Pushcart Nominees:
The Pushcart Prize accepts six nominations from each magazine from stories published (or scheduled to be published) in the current calendar year. We selected three flash pieces and three essays that appeared in 2024:

Holly Abbe | “Road Signs” -essay | Sept/Oct |
Sydney Chaffee | “Haunting” -flash | Sept/Oct |
Brian Lee Knopp | “The Toughest Texan” (essay, also appeared on NPR’s Snap Judgement) | March/April |
Jeanne Malmgren | “Day 1 of 1,000” – flash | March/April |
Tom McAllister | “When We Used to Glow” – flash | July/Aug |
Marcos Reyna | “Streams” -essay | Nov/Dec |
We wish these six writers the best of luck as the Pushcart team reviews all nominations.
