Hippocampus Magazine’s 2023 Best of the Net & Pushcart Prize Nominees

This year at Hippocampus Magazine we published 50+ pieces of creative nonfiction from emerging and established writers, and we are extremely proud of the brave, unique, and compelling voices we get to share with our readers in each issue. And every year, as award nomination deadlines loom, we’re faced with an incredible challenge.

We are delighted to announce our six Pushcart Prize nominations and two Sundress Publications Best of the Net nominations; these stories represent our motto “Memorable Creative Nonfiction” well.

Our Pushcart Nominees:

The Pushcart Prize accepts six nominations from each magazine from stories published (or scheduled to be published) in the current calendar year. We selected three flash pieces and three essays:

Author Name(s) Essay Name 2023 Issue
Camille U. Adams Why Deny the Obvious Child (flash) July/Aug
Katie Burgess This is a Drill (flash) Sept/Oct
Craig Holt Mass Nov/Dec
Sara Mann Decomposition Sept/Oct
Dheepa R. Maturi Unfolding Jan/Feb
Leighton Shreyer Thrift Store Stories (flash) Jan/Feb

The Best of the Net Nominees, submitted in September, are for stories published within their fiscal year of July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. Journals are allowed two submissions in each category; since we publish exclusively nonfiction, we’re able to submit two in total. We selected one piece from our flash submissions and one piece from our essay/memoir submissions:

Author Name(s) Essay Name Issue
Suzanne Orrell Kitchen Instincts Sept/Oct 2022
Lauren Woods De-Escalation (flash) July/Aug 2022

We wish these writers the best of luck as their pieces are reviewed by the award series’ editors and editorial board members.Congratulations!
